The waterproof electronics market is booming.
But the same can’t be said for water-resistant electronics.
The mainstay of smartphones and tablets has seen a sharp increase in water resistance and even the most robust electronics can be easily water-repellent, but for smartphones and desktops, water resistance is usually only one part of a story.
And the latest generation of smartwatches and fitness trackers has been doing just that.
But for waterproof devices, it’s not just about how waterproof the device is.
“Most people don’t have waterproof technology in their smartwatch or in their fitness tracker,” says Michael Shabazz, CEO of Tizen Corp., which makes the Android operating system for smartwares.
“If you’re looking at your waterproof device and you’re thinking, ‘Why do I need to be water-resistant?’
You’re not using your water-proofing for its own sake, you’re using it because it’s necessary.”
In the case of a smartwatch, the answer lies in its ability to capture and transmit light, or IR.
“When you put on a smart watch, it captures and transmits light.
It captures the light and transmutes it to something that it’s sending to the phone or tablet,” says Marko Pecznik, a product manager at Google, which makes Google Glass.
“But that signal has to go somewhere, and that is to the device’s battery.”
The question of what exactly that signal is is still an open question, says PecZnik.
“It’s something we’re really looking into,” he says.
In the end, the most important part of waterproof is actually how well it works.
That’s why many smartwars have opted to make their devices water-welcoming by putting them into water-tight enclosures.
But even when the technology does work well, it can still have issues.
“I don’t think people think about how they’ll actually use these things,” says Shabaz.
“They think, ‘I can put them in a backpack, they’ll go to work, I can charge them in the car, I’ll be able to watch TV on my phone.’
But I think most people don: ‘I don.
If I can’t put them on a watertight enclosure, then they won’t work.'”
But what if your smartwatch is actually more water resistant than the average wearable?
“The thing that is most important is how water resistant the device actually is,” says Pucznik.
This can be a big deal if your device is actually water resistant in the first place.
In order to really protect the device, you need to make sure that the device doesn’t break or become a fire hazard.
“The main thing is to make the device as water resistant as you can,” says Scott Johnson, a research analyst at Canalys, which provides market data to market research companies.
That means that the water- and moisture-resistance ratings on the device must be accurate enough to ensure that your device doesn.
“Even the very first time that the battery is turned on, the device can still be a fire risk,” he explains.
But Johnson adds that there are ways to make a smartwatch that’s water- or moisture-resistant.
“Water resistance doesn’t necessarily mean that the smartwatch has to be waterproof,” he notes.
“In some cases, it might be just a little bit water-retentive.”
To get a sense of how well your device works, you can test it in your home.
You can also go on Amazon to check out how it performs in a number of different environments.
If your smart watch has a water- resistance rating of less than 50 percent, it is water-friendly.
If it’s under 50 percent but is water resistant, it should work fine.
In some cases you might want to take it to a local hardware store to get a more detailed assessment.
To find out if your watch is actually a waterproof smartwatch: Use a device to hold it up to a standard of 80 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) for five seconds.
If the watch doesn’t turn on, try turning it on and off again until the battery light turns green.
If you still can’t get the device to turn on after five seconds, you have the battery indicator off.
“You should be able, with a standard voltage, to get the battery to a full charge by doing that,” says Johnson.
If that isn’t possible, try a battery charger.
The battery is supposed to last for 30 hours.
If a charger isn’t available or doesn’t have a charge, you’ll need to use a USB port.
You might also want to try a water resistant charger.
